I dove straight into book 2 after reading Nevernight, and devoured this one just as fast. A totally different flavor from its predecessor, this second installment in Jay Kristoff's trilogy was a page-turner through and through. Fleshing out the darker side of the vast world he's built, this hard dive into gladiatorial life gives Mia a new perspective, as well as another chance at revenge.

Of the three books, this one was the best, in my opinion. Even though the pace dragged a bit in places, the action was great and the new characters introduced were some of my favorites. Kristoff manages to write fight scenes that get your heart beating without describing every swing and counter. A few cliche moments in here, but not enough to ruin it for me. Also lighter on the footnotes than the first book, which I appreciated.
